Journalist Scott Carney’s New Book Explores Black Market Organ Trading

By Dianna Dilworth

Journalist/author Scott Carney has a new book out this week from William Morrow called The Red Market about the international network of organ brokers, bone thieves and child traffickers.

In an interview with Media Bistro’s Avant Guild, Carney explains how he reports on the black market without getting hurt. He said: “Most everyone in the world thinks that they are genuinely a good person, from the most hardened mafia don, to the black market person, to the cop who brutally beats some innocent victim. Everyone has a way they rationalize that what they do is a good thing. The trick is going into the interview empathizing with your subject and trying to see the world from their view.”

The book includes print and eBook editions. While Carney himself doesn’t yet read eBooks, he sees potential in digital publishing. In an interview with eBookNewser, Carney advises writers to be open to both digital and print. He said: “Writers need to think of themselves as a brand. You need to cultivate a reputation where people will seek your work out and try to get the your work published on as many mediums as possible. We have to keep our fingers in as many pies as possible and hope that one of them bakes.”
