Have Yourself a Literary Weekend

By Neal

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend in New York City, and you like literary magazines and independent presses, you’re in luck. Saturday and Sunday, the Small Press Center is putting on its 19th annual independent and small press book fair at 20 W. 44th St. with appearances by authors like Michael Cunningham, Mark Crispin Miller, and Katha Pollitt, along with Publishers Weekly editor Sara Nelson. If the presence of Miller and Pollitt didn’t tip you off that this is going to be a very blue-state event, panel topics like “Was the 2004 Election Stolen?” and “Roe v. Wade in 2007: No Rest for the Weary” should remove all doubt. Of course, this being New York City, I don’t imagine our core readership is particularly scared of liberals…

Out in Williamsburg, the Galapagos Art Space will host a one-day Legion of Lit Mags fair Saturday afternoon and evening. The editors of Small Spiral Notebook and Ballyhoo Stories have teamed up with several other literary magazines—BOMB, Opium, Pindeldyboz, Post Road, Quick Fiction, Swink, and Tin House—for five hours of readings and musical performances starting at 5 p.m.
