Google is celebrating the 153rd birthday of Ida B. Wells, an African-American journalist, newspaper editor and author, who made great strides in civil rights.

As editor of the black newspaper, The Free Speech and Headlight in Memphis, Wells spoke out against lynching and violence against blacks. She also helped found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People back in 1909, according to PBS.

According to Google, Wells “was a voracious reader, and had devoured the entirety of Shakespeare and Dickens before she turned twenty.”
