Get Ready for Another Literary Songwriting Contest

mrt-yourpocket.jpgRemember our musical comedy contest from a few weeks back? Well, the literary magazine Barrelhouse must have figured we were on to something, because they’re inviting readers to write them a theme song. But it has to be a special kind of theme song: “Just write a power ballad, using all the best/worst tropes from 80s hair metal,” the editors announce. “We’ll choose the power ballad that we think best embodies the true rocking, road-weary, dominant, sexy, seductive, all powerful, and uplifting spirit of Barrelhouse, and we’ll print it in our next issue. The song will also be recorded for download on our website.” The prizes are pretty modest: two copies of the issue in which your power ballad appears, a Mr. T in Your Pocket (pictured at right), “and free beer for life, if we ever actually meet you in person.” But there’s also bragging rights, and, really, aren’t those enough?
