From Jersey Shore to the Bookshelf: Self-Help Books for Jerks

By Jason Boog

illuminati.jpgMaybe nice guys do finish last. In a book carefully calibrated for controversy, one writer helped create a self-help book for the culture that made Jersey Shore a popular television show.

Today’s guest on the Morning Media Menu was Chris Illuminati, one of the co-authors of the new book, “A**holeology: The Science Behind Getting Your Way–and Getting Away with It.” Editor’s note: This discussion contains a smattering of profanity.

He discussed the tricky art of being an a**hole. Here’s a description from the book: “To truly be an a**hole is an art form. It requires the perpetrator to be cocky yet quietly confident, snide as well as sincere, sneaky while in your face. Better men than most have failed miserably. That’s why there’s this guide–the first book to walk you through the tricks of the trade and the numerous benefits the attitude reaps.”

What do you think? Is the book a clever satire, a publishing gimmick, a useful self-help book, or a sign of cultural decay?
