The New York Center for Independent Publishing announced yesterday that it will present this year’s Poor Richard Award, named after the almanac launched by early American indie publisher Ben Franklin, to Esther Margolis, who founded Newmarket Press in 1982 after spending 17 years rising through the ranks at Bantam Books, from a promotions assistant to the senior vice president in charge of global marketing and publicity. Today, Newmarket publishes between two and three dozen books a year, splitting its emphasis on the world of pop entertainment and various categories of pragmatic advice, from childcare to personal finance.
She will be presented with the award at the NYCIP’s annual benefit reception in early November.
