ESPN Blows Debut of First Miniseries

johnturturro-oliverplatt.jpgIt’s bad enough that Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx Is Burning had to lose half of its title between the hardcover and paperback editions in order to accomodate ESPN’s plans to adapt Jonathan Mahler‘s chronicle of the 1977 Yankees (see John Turturro and Oliver Platt as Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner at right) into an 8-hour miniseries. But, as our FishbowlNY brethren report, the first episode was delayed by the Home Run Derby, “an unofficial event that’s viewed as a sideshow to the All-Star Game, and is perenially the longest three hours in the history of television.” Puts an ironic twist on the Bronx website’s offer to stream the episode online for viewers who missed its Monday night debut…although a quick look at the network’s schedule also shows repeat airings tonight at 10 P.M. and midnight as well an 11 P.M. broadcast on ESPN Classics.
