The Mount, the former Lenox, Massachusetts, home of early twentieth-century novelist Edith Wharton, is facing foreclosure unless Edith Wharton Restoration, the nonprofit organization that owns the estate and its gardens, can raise $3 million by Thursday. Foreclosure proceedings began in February after the foundation missed a payment on the loan it had taken out to purchase Wharton’s book collection and return it to the 42-room mansion. Although the foundation is negotiating with the bank to keep the site open through this summer’s tourist season, time is short, and less than half of the money has been raised so far—$725,000 in collected contributions having been matched by another donor.
