The Associated Press is reporting that Doug Marlette died this morning when the car in which he was riding apparently hydroplaned off a Mississippi highway and into a tree. Though Marlette was best known for his Pulitzer-caliber work as an editorial cartoonist with the Charlotte Observer and other papers, and as the creator of the comic strip Kudzu, he was also the author of two critically praised novels, The Bridge (2001) and Magic Time (2006).
