Cuts and Anger at University of New Mexico Press

By Jason Boog

pic.jpgWhen news broke yesterday that the University of New Mexico Press would cut three employees and possibly outsource nine other positions, disgruntled workers published a statement criticizing the layoffs.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Ed, acquisitions editor Lisa Pacheco and sales and marketing manager Glenda Madden were included in the cuts. In the statement, employees questioned the leadership of the press’ director, Luther Wilson–alleging that he “just issued a $6,000 advance to a longtime friend for a children’s book proposal.”

Here’s more from the article: ‘Yesterday we were stunned, shocked,” Ms. Madden said in an interview with The Chronicle. ‘Today, it’s ‘We’re not going to take this lying down.” She noted that those laid off are all women and include the press’s only Latina employee.” (Via U of Illinois Press)
