Dutton Logo (GalleyCat)Carl Zimmer has signed a deal with the Penguin Random House imprint, Dutton. Zimmer has become well-known as a science journalist for The New York Times; he also teaches the craft of science writing at Yale University.

Zimmer plans to write a new book called She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: A History of Heredity. Executive editor Stephen Morrow negotiated the terms of this agreement with William Morris Endeavor literary agent Eric Simonoff.

Here’s more from the press release: “She Has Her Mother’s Laugh will discuss how genetics, epigenetics, and mechanisms of inheritance actually work. A biography of heredity, it will be the first book of its kind and will interweave historical research with original reporting on the emerging role of the genetic technology CRISPR, so-called selfish genes, neural mosaicism, and new studies on cultural inheritance all of which is beyond biology as we have understood it for the last century. This new science will fundamentally shape the future generations of our species.”
