BookTrust Calls BBC Kids Book List Too Focused on Classics

British literacy charity BookTrust has responded to the BBC’s summer reading list for kids saying that the list is too focused on classics.

The BBC’s LovetoRead campaign features books by Roald Dahl, JRR Tolkein, Harper Lee and Sue Townsend. Diana Gerald, BookTrust chief executive, admitted that the campaign is a great effort to push reading but that it is too steeped in well-known children’s books.

“Too often children are given ‘timeless classics’ to read, when there are so many other, newer books that are just as brilliant but can also talk to them about the world they know, in language that resonates with them,” she told The Telegraph.
