AvantGuild: Writing the Book on Work-Life Balance

By Neal

The BBC’s Katty Kay and ABC’s Claire Shipman talk to mediabistro.com about co-writing Womenomics last year in the midst of covering American politics in an election year—which neatly ties into the book’s theme of women striving to achieve a balance between their professional and personal lives. “It really started when we used to have these whispered conversations on the edges of Washington parties about how we sometimes wanted to be on TV less or turn down promotions or not take that big step in our careers,” Kay confides. “We were trying to find how to have our jobs, but also have more time for our families.”

“I don’t even think that I would have a book done by myself by now!” Shipman says of the collaboration process. “Knowing that she was working on chapter one and already had it done really forced me to stop procrastinating about chapter two because I knew I had to get it done. I think that sort of dynamic really helped, because otherwise you might just get lost in the abyss.”
