AvantGuild: Cross-Promoting YA Lit and Youth Activism

By Neal

justina-chen-headley.jpgIn the latest installment of mediabistro.com’s “Book Keeping” series, Justina Chen Headley explains why she’s co-sponsoring youth activism grants to promote her new YA novel, Girl Overboard:

“I do community service because it’s something I have to do; my mom ingrained in me the conviction that we all can and should change the world. And let me be perfectly clear: these types of philanthropic endeavors require a ton of personal time, effort, and energy. It would be much, much easier to simply launch a book. Tying a service project to a novel is like giving birth to twins. It more than doubles the workload.”

Headley has some experience in this field, though: When her first novel came out, she launched an essay contest for a $5,000 college scholarship.
