“Are comics sexist? Der.”

The Frey/LeRoy scandals aren’t the only controversies sparking conversations throughout the publishing industry right now. In yesterday’s edition of her comics news blog, The Beat, Heidi MacDonald writes a detailed consideration of the reaction to recent allegations in which a female comics professional accuses a fellow artist of sexual assault. MacDonald’s piece is just one of several thoughtful responses to the allegation. For example, Ronée Garcia Bourgeois, who broke the story two weeks ago, convenes a roundtable discussion of female creators who indicate that the behavior described is far from uncommon. And yet, as Elayne Riggs notes, “I’ve yet to see one single male comics blogger on my blogroll talk about this subject…It’s part and parcel of the overall industry problem, methinks, that women often don’t seem to exist except to each other…”
