Another Story You’ve Already Read Here

PW Daily, June 13: “If you want to get your memoir published, or at least guarantee an editor will look at your manuscript, you can now turn to some authors on MySpace for help. The Memoirists Collective, which was recently launched by four newly-published memoirists who met each other on the networking site, began as a forum for writers working within the genre. Now, with its second contest underway—the prize is having your manuscript read by the authors’ editors—the Collective has proved a smart way for these authors to meet new readers and talk about their trade.”

GalleyCat, June 2: [Hillary] Carlip mentioned that she’s part of a loose band of writers called ‘The Memoirists Collective,’ along with Danielle Trusoni, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, and Maria Headley. As an act of group promotion, the ‘group of hot, desperate writers who are looking for that special someone who understands the complexities of their troubled, often misunderstood genre’ have been running a string of contests where readers could win a chance to hang out with the quartet after Carlip’s NYC B&N reading or have their own memoir proposals looked at by a literary agent.”

Afternoon UPDATE: Looking at today’s PW Daily, it appears GalleyCat readers also had prior awareness of Ted Turner’s book deal and the proposed boycott of Cathy’s Book (although, to give credit where it’s due, their coverage of the latter does include a response from Perseus Books).
