Anna Deavere Smith Advocates for the New York Public Library

Anna Deavere Smith (GalleyCat)Anna Deavere Smith, an actress and playwright, has become an advocate for the New York Public Library (NYPL). She hopes to mobilize bibliophiles to insist that their representatives approve of a budget increase for this institution.

Last year, The Gothamist reported that several NYPL buildings seem to be suffering from great disrepair. A great number of patrons have been visiting their local branches to enjoy an array of different services, classes, and story time sessions. These reasons and more propelled Smith to write a letter to library patrons urging them to contact New York City’s mayor and city council members.

Here’s an excerpt from Smith’s letter: “After last year’s letter writing campaign, NYC libraries received a historic funding increase that helped them hire more librarians, institute 6-day service in all branches, stay open for far more evening and weekend hours, and make life better for millions of New Yorkers. But there is still so much more we can and must do—especially with literacy for kids and providing digital access. City leaders need to hear from you. Sign your letter to Mayor de Blasio, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and your own City Council member. Tell them we need more investment in libraries!” (Photo CreditMary Ellen Mark)
