Algonquin adds a paperback line

By Carmen

For the most part, the North Carolina-based indie Algonquin Books farms out their paperbacks to major publishers (like Steve Almond’s CANDYFREAK and Laila Lalami’s HOPE AND OTHER DANGEROUS PURSUITS to Harcourt.) But now they’ve decided to add a dedicated paperback line, according a press release issued yesterday, that will launch this spring.

Lead titles include the PB editions of Almond’s second short story collection THE EVIL B.B. CHOW AND OTHER STORIES and Emyl Jenkins’ debut mystery STEALING WITH STYLE, as well as trade paper originals like Andrei Codrescu’s NEW ORLEANS, MON AMOUR.

As part of the launch, the company plans a special promotion for all Algonquin paperback editions for all of 2006: “Every paperback published is available at a 50% discount for 5 or more copies per title, per ship-to location.” Sounds like a good way to get people interested, at least from a co-op standpoint…
