A Bookstore Where Everybody Knows Your Name

By Neal

Earlier this summer, photographer Sarah Stolfa published The Regulars, a collection of portraits of customers at the Philadelphia bar where she worked as a bartender. Craig Popelars, the marketing director at Algonquin Books, came up with a fun idea to help his colleagues at Artisan promote the book—inviting independent booksellers to take staff photos at their own local watering holes and send him the results.

We’ve given you a glimpse of the contribution from Village Books in Bellingham, Washington, along with the original Regulars cover; other participants included San Francisco’s Green Apple, Seattle’s Third Place Bookstore, and the Harvard Book Store of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Each of the participating bookstores will receive posters using their photos; we imagine those will be pretty popular in the back offices.
