Ten days ago, we learned that book sales showed a modest gain in June. How did bookstores perform? Their sales dropped 6.6 percent for the month, and have dropped 4.6 percent for the first half of 2007, during which time book sales as a whole have risen 7.9 percent—and, to add insult to injury, the entire retail sector has posted a 4 percent gain.
