West Side Story Sings Off Key with $10.5 Million Opening at Box Office

By Brad Pareso

Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed West Side Story sang off key in its domestic debut with a subdued $10.5 million from 2,800 theaters, but the closing song has yet to be written regarding the musical’s box office fate. (THR)

That’s cause for concern because Disney and 20th Century Studios spent $100 million to revive the Shakespearean love story for modern times and stand to lose millions, unless West Side Story endures at the box office through the holidays and Oscar season. (Variety)

West Side Story is being released with a theatrical window and its results are under that of another Broadway Hispanic and Latino feature musical released earlier this year. That being Warner Bros. In the Heights, which fizzled with a $11.5 million start off a theatrical and HBO Max day-and-date debut. (Deadline)
