Top Gun: Maverick Breaks Memorial Day Weekend Box Office Record

By Brad Pareso

Top Gun: Maverick soared to the highest-ever Memorial Day weekend opening by raking in an impressive $156 million at the domestic box office in its first four days of release. (LA Times)

That means more than 11 million people will have pried themselves away from in-home streaming services, according to EntTelligence, a research firm. Add in overseas ticket sales, and the global opening total for Top Gun: Maverick over that period will approach $300 million. (NYT)

The film has ousted Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which brought in $153 million in its 2007 release, as the top-performing Memorial Day opener of all time. (Axios)

Top Gun: Maverick‘s launch is without a doubt a career best for Tom Cruise, and is the first time he has had a film open to $100 million or more. The film’s release was delayed for two years due to the coronavirus pandemic. (THR / Heat Vision)

Disney and 20th Century’s The Bob’s Burgers Movie, the only new release brave enough to battle Top Gun: Maverick, served up $12.4 million over the traditional weekend and $14.8 million through Monday. (Variety)
