Smartmatic, OAN Settle Defamation Lawsuit

By Brad Pareso

Election and voting technology company Smartmatic has settled its nearly 3-year-long defamation case against One America News Network. The settlement was announced on Tuesday, and the terms remain confidential. (TVNewser)

The case against OAN, filed in November 2021, was part of a slew of lawsuits aimed at right-leaning television networks that aired unproven or disproven allegations of voting fraud by attorneys associated with Donald Trump. (WaPo)

In its original complaint, Smartmatic said it had been a victim of the network’s “decision to increase its viewership and influence by spreading disinformation” as it attempted to siphon off viewers from Fox News. OAN repeatedly linked Smartmatic to a nationwide vote-rigging conspiracy, the complaint said, despite knowing there was no evidence and that Smartmatic’s technology and software had been used only in Los Angeles County during the election. Smartmatic still has pending lawsuits against Fox News, the smaller conservative channel Newsmax, and several pro-Trump figures who also pushed lies about the election. (CNN)
