Prosecutors Seek September Retrial for Harvey Weinstein After Rape Conviction Tossed

By Brad Pareso

Prosecutors asked for a September retrial for Harvey Weinstein during a hearing Wednesday in Manhattan, the disgraced movie mogul’s first court appearance since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned by an appeals court last week. (AP)

The 72-year-old Weinstein was rolled into court Wednesday in a wheelchair. After his conviction was overturned last week, he was transferred from the Mohawk Correctional Facility in upstate New York, where he had been serving a 23-year sentence, to Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital for monitoring and treatment. The state Court of Appeals last Thursday overturned his conviction in a 4-3 decision, and Weinstein was hospitalized days later for a battery of tests. The Court of Appeals found that the judge in the landmark #MeToo trial had prejudiced Weinstein with improper rulings, including a decision to let women testify about allegations that weren’t part of the case.
