Presidential Biographer, NBC News Contributor Jon Meacham on George H.W. Bush: ‘An Imperfect Man, He Left Us a More Perfect Union’

President Trump declared Wednesday a national day of mourning, as America remembered its 41st president, George H.W. Bush. The state funeral took place Wednesday morning at the Washington National Cathedral. (TVNewser)

Presidential historian Jon Meacham delivered a solemn and emotional eulogy. “Strong and gracious, comforting and charming, loving and loyal, he was our shield in danger’s hour,” Meacham said. “An imperfect man, he left us a more perfect union.” (Mediaite)

Noting Bush had “big, strong hands,” Meacham, Bush’s biographer and a frequent MSNBC contributor, called him America’s last great soldier statesman, a 20th century founding father in the tradition of Washington, Adams, the Roosevelts, Truman and Eisenhower, “Men who believed in causes larger than themselves.” (Deadline)

Former President George W. Bush remembered his late father as a humble leader, mentor, man of faith, and “the best father a son or daughter could have” in a touching eulogy. (HuffPost)

George W. Bush also invoked his father’s famous call to volunteerism—“a thousand points of light”—telling the audience that “to us, his was the brightest of a thousand points of light.” After the funeral, George H.W. Bush’s remains were flown back to Houston and then transported via funerary train to the grounds of his presidential library at Texas A&M University. (Time)
