Musk on Trump, Twitter: ‘I Would Reverse the Permanent Ban’

By Brad Pareso

Elon Musk said he would reverse Twitter’s ban on former president Donald Trump, articulating for the first time his stance on one of the most consequential decisions before him at the social media site he is acquiring. (WaPo)

“I would reverse the permanent ban,” Musk said at a conference Tuesday when the interviewer asked directly about Trump. “Perma bans just fundamentally undermine trust in Twitter as a town square where everyone can voice their opinion.” (Bloomberg)

He mentioned his talks with Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey—and noted they agree Twitter should not support permanent bans on accounts unless they involve bots or spams and scams. (USA Today)

Musk says he’s “very much on the same page” as the European Union about the Digital Services Act, a package of web platform regulations. Musk appeared in a short video alongside EU Commissioner Thierry Breton to confirm his support for the DSA, which—among other things—requires large platforms to police illegal content and assess the risk of harm their services pose, including from disinformation.
