The company said Tuesday that Brown, who was previously an anchor for NBC News and CNN, will become a consultant, stepping down from the position of vice president of media partnerships. Brown first joined Meta in 2017 to help lead Facebook’s news partnership program. At the time, the social media service was grappling with its growing role as a distributor of news. The company was also looking to fight the spread of misinformation on its site in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election. (Bloomberg)

In hiring Brown, Facebook asked her to create partnership programs with news organizations that used the platform. A former prime-time anchor on CNN, Brown built a rapport with news executives who saw Facebook both as a rival for digital advertising dollars and as an important—but fickle—source of traffic for their websites and apps.
