Lourdes Maldonado Is Third Mexican Journalist Murdered This Year

By Brad Pareso

Authorities in Mexico say a journalist has been murdered in Tijuana, the second killing of a media worker in the border city in less than a week and the latest in a string of killings in one of the world’s most dangerous countries for reporters. (Al Jazeera)

Lourdes Maldonado, a Tijuana-based radio journalist, was shot outside her home on Sunday, adding to the killings of Margarito Martinez and Jose Luis Gamboa earlier this month. Maldonado in 2019 publicly asked President Andres Manuel López Obrador for help in a labor dispute, saying she felt threatened. (Bloomberg)

Maldonado had been locked in a years-long labor dispute with Jaime Bonilla, who was elected governor of Baja California later that year as a candidate from López Obrador’s Morena party. Maldonado had recently announced that she won her dispute with a media company Bonilla owned after nine years of litigation. (AP)
