James Comey Reportedly Willing to Testify, But Wants to Do So Publicly

Former FBI director James Comey has declined an invitation from the Senate Intelligence Committee to testify on Tuesday. Before his firing, he was scheduled to testify before the committee on Thursday. Acting director Andrew McCabe testified in his place and affirmed that despite what the White House said, there is still “broad support” for Comey within the FBI. (Mediaite)

According to a close associate of Comey, he is willing to testify, but wants it to be in public. (NYT)

Comey himself has stayed out of the spotlight, though there have been a number of leaks attributed to people close to him responding to a number of claims made by President Trump and the White House. Most notably, in response to Trump’s tweet threatening Comey “better hope there are no tapes” of a January dinner the two had, someone close to Comey responded by saying he “hopes” there are tapes. On its Twitter site Friday, WikiLeaks offered $100,000 for the alleged “Comey tapes.” If any such tapes exist, the problem is that, because of suspected collusion between WikiLeaks and the Kremlin, the tapes may never be heard—at least not on this side of the Atlantic. (HuffPost)
