Instagram and Twitter Are Dealing with Bugs Affecting Follower Counts, Like Totals

It’s getting buggy out there in the world of social media, as Facebook was joined by Instagram and Twitter on the list of platforms experiencing difficulties. (Adweek)

The Instagram bug has eaten away at the follower counts of many of the site’s top users. For example, Kim Kardashian and Justin Bieber lost 1.9 million and 1.7 million followers, respectively. (Mashable)

Instagram has now tweeted that the follower loss was not the result of a fake user account culling, but instead due to a glitch it is still looking into. (Fast Company)

The company has a history of killing off fake or spammy accounts. Back in November it said it would be taking steps to target accounts using third-party apps and bots to boost their popularity. (USA Today)
