Facebook Is Creating 2 Regional Operations Centers to Help Safeguard Global Elections

Facebook is establishing two new regional operations centers, at its existing offices in Dublin and Singapore, as a continuation of its efforts to safeguard upcoming elections around the world. (Adweek)

The company said Monday that it will take steps to guard against the spread of fake news and misinformation on its platform, including expanding the reach of a searchable database of political ads. (WSJ)

Facebook is making the Ad Archive available in India in February (votes take place there in April and May), then Ukraine and Israel before their elections. It plans to open up the archive globally by the end of June, and says information about the ads will be searchable for up to seven years. (Engadget)

The archive will include information like who paid for an ad, how many people it reached, and demographic information about which groups the ad was targeted to. Facebook rolled out a similar archive last May before the 2018 US midterm elections and has other archives for political ads in the UK and Brazil. (Recode)

Also Monday, Facebook marked Data Privacy Day by introducing a new Privacy and Data Use Business Hub, a one-stop shop for resources that businesses can use to ensure they are protecting people’s information while on the Facebook platform. (Adweek)
