Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes: It’s Time to Break Up Facebook

In an op-ed for The New York Times, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes called for regulators to break up Facebook. (NYT)

In the piece published Thursday, Hughes says that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has “unchecked power” and influence “far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government.” (CNN)

Hughes, who last saw Zuckerberg in summer 2017, said his former business partner and Facebook have become too big to regulate and need to be held accountable. “Mark’s influence is staggering, far beyond that of anyone else in the private sector or in government. Mark is a good, kind person. But I’m angry that his focus on growth led him to sacrifice security and civility for clicks,” he wrote. (THR)

In a response to Hughes’ op-ed, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s VP of global affairs and communications, said, “Facebook accepts that with success comes accountability. But you don’t enforce accountability by calling for the breakup of a successful American company.” (Variety)
