Doctor Who Fans Cheer First Female Doctor’s Debut

By Christine Zosche

Doctor Who fans got their first glimpse of a historic new Doctor on Christmas night as Jodie Whittaker—the first woman to hold the role—made her first appearance in the role as part of the series’ annual Christmas special. Peter Capaldi, the 12th actor to play the Doctor, made a dramatic departure as the character regenerated, per Doctor Who mythology, into a new incarnation. (Variety)

The special aired at 5:30 p.m. local time in the U.K. and was the sixth-most-watched program of the day. It drew 5.7 million viewers for a 29.1 share in the overnights, pacing slightly ahead of last year’s special. (Deadline)
