Amazon, Apple, Disney Bid on NFL Sunday Ticket Rights

Disney, Apple and Amazon have all submitted bids to become the new broadcast rights owner of the National Football League’s out-of-market Sunday Ticket package. They’re just waiting to find out who wins. The three companies submitted bids weeks ago, according to people familiar with the matter. (CNBC)

Alex Sherman of CNBC reports the NFL wants at least $2 billion in the deal, which includes a stake in NFL media as part of the package. In the current deal, DirecTV has been paying $1.5 billion and—while the NFL would like to reach $3 billion—it is unlikely they will reach that number from one of the finalists. (Sports Illustrated)

The vast majority of the most-watched broadcasts on television are sports and—in particular—NFL games. Because pro football games are so disproportionately popular compared to any other type of TV content, the NFL is able to command extraordinarily expensive media distribution rights. (Axios)
