Staff at Satire Site The Onion Announce Plans to Unionize

For the folks at The Onion, labor relations are no laughing matter. Editorial and video staffers at the humor website and its sister sites, Clickhole and A/V Club, have announced they are unionizing, at a time when controlling shareholder Univision Communications Inc. is exploring extensive cost cuts at its digital properties. The Writers Guild of America East announced Thursday that “an overwhelming majority” of the staff, comprised of about 100 employees, have signed union cards and called on management to voluntarily recognize the WGA East as the collective bargaining representative. (Variety)

Univision-owned Gizmodo Media had already unionized when it was still owned by Nick Denton and known as Gawker Media. The Onion News Network writers had already unionized with the Writers Guild in 2011. (New York Post)

Onion Inc. spokesman David Ford told the Chicago Tribune the company has begun discussions with the guild and “hope to arrive at an arrangement in short order.” (U.S. News & World Report / AP)
