W+K and Rory McIlroy Get All Their Greens in New Nike Golf Spot

By Patrick Coffee

Doesn’t Rory McIlroy seem like a slightly more down to earth dude than the previous Nike Golf celebrity spokesperson, Tiger Woods?

Not that we know him or anything, but this latest spot from W+K Portland tells us that he is all about the work, the work, the work when powered by some fresh kale and green apple smoothies.

This campaign comes before the beginning of The Masters on Thursday, where McIlroy will attempt to score a career grand slam (which is not the same as a single-year grand slam; even Tiger never did that).

The point seems to be that–contrary to very popular belief–golfers are steely hardcore athletes just like their contemporaries in more demonstrative sports like basketball or football or even baseball.

In order to succeed at something so repetitive, one has to practice over and over and over and over again. To reinforce that conclusion, W+K created some additional shorts with different athletes elaborating on the same theme: Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, Michelle Wie and Patrick Rodgers.

Here are a few of them.

We’re getting a kind of an Overlook Hotel vibe from this Wie putting-in-the-hallway entry.

And here’s your requisite water hazard shot.

So golfers are undeniably professional athletes like the rest of us (are not). Remember John Daly, though? If someone were to create a “Golfers Who Are Also Bears” tumblr, we might click on it.
