VW Golf Goes Back to the Future…Maybe

By Bob Marshall

It’s undeniable that the Back to the Future trilogy has become part of the “new cult canon,” and marketers are finding ways to cash in. From AMC marathons of the films to Nike making fantasies a reality with limited edition “Nike Mag” shoes for charity, the movies’ 21st-century revival doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, and the above short from Tribal DDB/DDB UK and Shiny Red for the VW Golf GTI is further proof of that.

In 10 days, the spot has garnered over 150,000 views on YouTube, living up to the the flack’s self-proclaimed “viral” label (It might have done even better had it been produced to look even more lo-fi). So, where do our two test drivers and their Golf GTI end up? Spoiler Alert: They go to VW’s UK Facebook page, where their adventures through the Golf’s 35-year history begin the first year the car was produced, 1976. On the page, the drivers send social status updates from the past, and visitors from the page can register to win an prize from yesteryear–a Polaroid camera. The page says it will supply Polaroid film to the winner of the camera, and considering that Polaroid stopped production of the film in 2008, we certainly hope it’s a lot.
