Tools of the Trade: Kirsten Fischer of Media+

By Kyle O'Brien

Tools of the Trade is a new AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Kirsten Fischer, senior media manager at Media+ in Seattle.

What is one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

My timer clock helps me stay on track throughout the day to get all my tasks done, because managing multiple accounts means there are multiple things that need your attention. I love using it to brainstorm for a new campaign or for performance problem solving, but there are other tasks like billing and client deliverables that are also imperative to my job at Media+, so I use my timer to help me focus.

Why is it your favorite?

The timer clock is small enough I can easily take it anywhere for work or for fun, like to the park or move it around the kitchen. I’ve used it to time my sister for how long she can stay in the freezing Puget Sound water, for cooking on the grill, and trying to take shorter showers to save water. But the best part is not having to use my phone so I can be present in what I’m doing and not have to worry about it getting sandy or water damaged. Our phones have so many tools and apps, but also distractions, so it’s nice to use a tool that is separate from my pocket computer.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

I saw a gal on TikTok redecorating her work-from-home setup and she had this timer, which piqued my interest. I liked the way it was modern but still had some character. I need my space to be enjoyable to look at since it’s in the middle of my apartment.

How does it help you be successful?

At Media+ I work across multiple clients and campaigns, so there are often a lot of things happening at once. Having a timer helps me ensure I’m allocating enough time to get tasks done thoughtfully without losing track of the rest of my day.

Does it have sentimental value?

It doesn’t have sentimental value, but having a clock that matches my other items on my desk gives it a very peaceful, cohesive look which does bring me joy.

Do you think your tool could go TikTok viral? Why or why not?

Absolutely—it already has. I’ve seen similar products to this one on TikTok, but to me this one is the best because you can rotate it to start the timer, and it shows an actual clock as well vs. just being a timer. It can also be used in the kitchen, for games and workouts.
