Tools of the Trade: Hillel Hurwitz of Bald

By Kyle O'Brien

Tools of the Trade is an AgencySpy feature to help highlight the many tools that help make advertising and marketing folks successful. The tools can be anything that helps people perform at their top form, from a favorite drafting table to the best software program to a lucky pen, a vintage typewriter or a pair of headphones.

Next up is Hillel Hurwitz, founder and CEO of brand building agency Bald.

What is the name of the one tool you use all the time at work, and how does it inspire your work?

The Desktop Boxing Kit. It’s equal parts creativity booster and stress reliever, and it’s a great tool to help me concentrate by giving me something to fidget with that isn’t flammable.

Why is it your favorite?

Honestly, it’s the thing I never knew I needed in my work life until I got one. I use it every day, multiple times a day. Some days, I spend more time with it than my partner, so there’s definitely a strong relationship there. Although, this one doesn’t fight back.

How did you acquire your tool or hear about it for the first time?

It was gifted to me. Apparently, I was giving off vibes that I needed a desktop boxing kit. Interestingly, it was given to me by someone on my team. Also interestingly, that someone is no longer on our team, but the Boxing Kit survived.

How does it help you be successful?

It keeps things in perspective. You know the saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” This literally will only make your fingers sweat, and so it often reminds me to ask: is it really worth it? Seriously though, at Bald, we believe that creativity and joy go hand-in-hand. This little thing provides a healthy dose of both—getting me through the big challenges and to the small victories.
