GS&P Hires ‘Van Gogh BnB’ Creative Mike Costello as ACD

By Erik Oster

Goodby, Silverstein & Partners has added to its creative department yet again with the hire of associate creative director Mike Costello, The Drum reports.

Costello joins GS&P from Leo Burnett Chicago, where he has served as an associate creative director and art director since June of 2012. While with Leo Burnett he was part of the creative team responsible for “Van Gogh BnB,” installation for The Art Institute of Chicago which allowed visitors to stay in a real-life model of Van Gogh’s “The Bedroom.” The effort went on to become a favorite at Cannes Lions. Other notable campaigns Costello worked on while at Leo Burnett include “Mayhem DIY” for Allstate and “Pick Up” for Firestone. Before joining Leo Burnett, Costello spent almost eight years with Arnold Worldwide in Boston. He arrived at Arnold as an art director in October of 2004 and was promoted to associate creative director nearly four years later. While with Arnold Worldwide he worked with clients including McDonald’s, ESPN and Volvo.

“Throughout his career, Mike has created edgy work that touches culture, from the ‘truth’ campaign to ‘Van Gogh BnB,'” Margaret Johnson, who was named as GS&P’s first CCO this August, told The Drum. “This is the kind of work we admire and look forward to seeing more of with his arrival.”

In addition to Johnson’s appointment, GS&P’s summer agency leadership restructuring also included promoting Derek Robson to president,  director of account management Brian McPherson and director of new business Leslie Barrett to managing director roles and naming director of brand strategy Bonnie Wan and director of communication strategy Christine Chen as partners.

Costello’s appointment follows that of Julia Mee as the agency’s first CMO earlier this month. GS&P also added a dozen members to its creative department in July and the agency’s new business wins this year include StubHub, mobile social gaming company GREE (creators of League of War) and the Golden State Warriors.
