Facebook Open Graph: Everything We Know So Far

At the F8 conference yesterday, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg laid out the Open Graph technology that allows the social site to spread its fingers across the Web. Here’s what you need to know. This is important to all of you.

-The social site has taken one giant step toward becoming an all-knowing sentient being that may one day be able to program your Pandora page without you ever entering information.


-You will start seeing your Facebook friends’ images all across the Web.

-“We’ve had this policy where you can’t store and cache any data for more than 24 hours, and we’re going to go ahead and we’re going to get rid of that policy,” Zuckerberg said.

-With “like” buttons as the cornerstone, ‘Open Graph’ could potentially hurt Google.

-What does this mean for privacy? Well, it’s your responsibility to opt out, and then opt out again. No, really.

-But will you want to opt out? “The fact is, though, that this is the way it’s going and there’s nothing you can do about it. You can opt out, sure, but Open Graph is so compellingly powerful that you’d be crazy to ignore it.”
