Droga5 Decks the Halls Out of Santa in Holiday Effort for Coach

Droga5 launched a new holiday spot for Coach which takes the irreverent holiday ad to new extremes.

While the irreverent holiday ad has become a bit of a phenomenon in recent years, with adam&eveDDB’s  “Could I Be Any Clearer?” and “Sorry, I Spent It On Myself” for Harvey Nichols as prime examples, Droga5 ramps things up with its “#GiveCoachOrElse” spot for Coach, depicting an assault on Father Christmas. Santa is relaxing at home when he hears a knock at the door. When he answers it an unidentified woman immediately punches him square in the face, taking advantage of the downed Saint Nick to grab herself a Coach Swagger bag and make a quick change to Santa’s list. While some may see the spot as a welcome reprieve from the overly-sacharine ads that still dominate the holiday landscape, others may feel it takes things a step too far. After all, if parents are upset by an ad suggesting that Santa doesn’t buy all their children’s gifts, how are they going to feel about their kids possibly witnessing a physical assault on Kris Kringle? (Although it’s likely Coach will be more careful about when this one airs.) There’s also the question of whether such an approach is really appropriate for the brand. One thing you can’t argue, however, is that “#GiveCoachOrElse” is certainly attention grabbing.
