Droga5 and Teenage Vampires Are Over the ‘Man Bun’ Trend

By Patrick Coffee

“Man bun” follows “dad bod” as the latest phrase we wish we’d never heard.

We have yet to see a single male human wearing his hair in a bun in public and we live in New York Fucking City, but apparently a bunch of guys are doing it in L.A. or Milan or wherever the hell. It’s big enough to inspire a slew of semi-serious headlines like “Man Buns Are Making Guys Go Bald,” “Why I Cut My Man Bun” and even the height of in-joke nonsense, a piece defending the “clip-on man bun.

These head turds are so prevalent that they even make an appearance in the new Toyota ad by the world’s hippest agency, which launched yesterday. It’s a sequel to the September spot starring Jaleel White and a wax Urkel figure, and it could not possibly be more Droga.

Concept: combine unrelated but similarly unbearable cliches and then snark on those cliches because in case you missed it, this is an advertisement. They even threw in a ride sharing app reference.

Pretty creative way to touch on some of the Scion’s many attractive features, though.

The next spot in the series stars another sort of groan-worthy character: the stock photo businessman/woman who hasn’t yet realized that no one wears formal outfits to the office anymore. Not even account people on a Monday.

Thankfully, the big-budget teenage vampire saga is on hiatus after the end of the Twilight series. But generic, gender-stereotyping stock photo businessfolk will be with us forever, no matter how hard Sheryl Sandberg tries to banish them to the forgotten world of landlines and Hotmail accounts.

What will be the next cliche to get the Droga treatment? How about the totally unexpected winky face guest appearance by Michael Bolton?
