BBDO New York, FedEx Explain ‘How the Holidays Arrive’

BBDO New York launched the holiday spot “North Pole” for FedEx, which will run as a 30-second broadcast spot in addition to its full-length, 43-second version online.

The ad promotes FedEx as “How the Holidays Arrive” with a look at Santa’s workshop that reveals that even Father Christmas relies on FedEx. When a couple of kids being given a tour of sneak behind a roped off area, they find Santa watching football inside a FedEx office. Worried that his cover is blowm, Santa makes a point to show the kids his sleigh, adding, “It’s how I deliver all my presents, by myself,” but the act is less than convincing.

With FedEx expecting a record amount of shipments this holiday season, the inspiration for the “How the Holidays Arrive” approach is pretty clear. The ad itself does a well enough job of communicating the message and manages to avoid the saccharine sentimentality still common in holiday ads, but it’s ultimately pretty forgettable. “North Pole” will run in a 30-second version on cable and broadcast, with the 43-second online version promoted through FedEx’s social channels.
