Audio: Geico VO Guy Fired For Asking a Tea Party Group Freedom Works ‘How Many (of your agency’s) Employees Are Mentally Retarded’

By Matt Van Hoven

Lance Baxter, aka D.C. Douglas, is the voice over guy for Geico, speaking such now-famous words, “15 minutes could save you 15 percent or more on your car insurance”. But now he’ll go down in history as having been fired by the auto insurer for calling teaparty group Freedom Works and asking them how many employees are mentally retarded. And if they have a PR strategy for when a member kills someone. He left these questions on their voice mail. Click play to listen.

Baxter, er Douglas, lays out how this whole thing happened on his blog. But that doesn’t matter: what does is that he had the balls to say something about things he disagreed with and it got him fired. Had he not said “mentally retarded” this probably wouldn’t have happened.
