303Lowe Sydney Brings Back Captain Risky for Budget Direct

By Erik Oster

At the beginning of the year, 303Lowe Sydney launched a new campaign for home and auto insurance brand Budget Direct introducing the Captain Risky character with a 90-second spot. Now, Captain Risky is back for another “Close Call.”

The new 30-second spot shows Captain Risky embarking on a characteristically foolhardy stunt. “Budget Direct have just won Money Magazine’s Insurer of the Year 2015. That’s pretty big news. But Captain Risky has created a stunt that he thinks is even bigger and better. See him ride a wave of danger into glory,” 303Lowe executive creative director Richard Morgan told LBB.

Risky mentions the company’s accomplishment and feels the need to upstage Budget Direct. “Can you do this?” he asks, riding a jet-powered car on an airplane runway and narrowly missing a collision with a plane. The spot ends with the voicoever, “At Budget Direct, we don’t insure Captain Risky to keep prices low.” For the spot, 303Lowe teamed up with production company GoodOil and director Hamish Rothwell, who shot the spot on-location in Goulburn, NSW. “Close Call” loses something from its predecessor in focusing on just one stunt, rather than a series of them, but it does manage to hammer home the Insurer of the Year message and connect it to the character. We expect to see plenty more from the bearded bumbler in the future.
