Why Did a Station in Hawaii Air Baseball Instead of News?

By Kevin Eck

Viewers expecting to watch the 5:00 p.m. news on Honolulu, Hawaii’s KITV Friday night, got an hour of baseball instead.

The ABC affiliate told viewers at the top of the hour it was having “some major technical difficulties” and couldn’t air its 5:00 p.m. The anchors then tossed to a game between San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks airing on San Francisco Bay Area NBC owned station KNTV.

According to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, KITV had a problem in master control.

The station has the rights to air Giants baseball, “so we thought it a great value for viewers to air a live Giants game that would be blacked out in Hawaii,” as opposed to a Dr. Oz rerun, Jackson said.

Technicians were able to fix the problem in time to air KITV’s 6 p.m. newscast. Baseball fans were directed to KITV’s digital channel 126 to watch the end of the Giants game.
