“The cartilage had worn out on my right shoulder,” Ward told the Houston Chronicle. “So they put in some kind of plastic cartilage replacement and a rod in the ball joint and sewed me up, and here I am.”

He was absent from ABC owned station KTRK for three weeks while recovering.

Ward has been with KTRK since 1966 and has been its primary anchor since 1968. He returned to air last week to anchor the 6:00 p.m. news. According to the Chronicle, he hopes to be back on the 10:00 p.m soon.

“I’ve had a little maintenance,” said Ward. “But I’m good for another 50,000 miles.”
