On Monday night, the 30th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards were held at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall. Much of the night was devoted to broadcast journalism legends. Special tributes honored Walter Cronkite and Don Hewitt, and Barbara Walters, longtime ABC News correspondent and creator and co-host of “The View,” received a Lifetime Achievement Award presented by ABC News president, David Westin.
PBS received the most honors of the evening with six Emmys. CBS and NBC both nabbed five awards.
“NBC Nightly News” won the most among network evening newscasts, picking up two awards for their Afghanistan coverage and one for breaking coverage of the financial collapse last September.
Election coverage figured prominently into this year’s awards. CNN received its sole Emmy for the CNN Election Center, and NBC News received one for its “Decision 08” coverage.
Regional Emmys went to KSTP (Minneapolis/St. Paul) and KHOU (Houston). KSTP won for spot news for its reporting on the collapse of the 35W Mississippi River bridge that killed 13 people. Previously, KSTP was recognized with a regional Emmy for having the first reporter on the scene after the fatal collapse. KHOU won for “Hiding Homicides,” an in-depth investigative report on the Houston Police Department’s habit of ruling murders as suicides to avoid paperwork, further investigation, and rising murder rates.
