Longtime Kansas City Anchor Takes New Role as ‘Anchor Emeritus’

By Kevin Eck

After more than 40 years on the anchor desk, Larry Moore has announced he will soon step back from anchoring everyday and take on a new role as “Anchor Emeritus” for Kansas City ABC affiliate KMBC.

Moore will continue to anchor the station’s 6:00 p.m. news until November 27. Then, the station said he will “continue to share inspiring stories of Dream Factory children, contribute to special news projects, appear at station community events and provide fill-in anchor support.”

The veteran anchor scaled his hours back last December, anchoring just the 6:00 p.m. news.

“I cannot begin to express the depth of our gratitude for what Larry Moore means to this station and to Kansas City,” Sarah Smith, president and general manager of KMBC-KCWE said in a statement. “His career and life define everything that is good about this city.”

“Few individuals have the opportunity to write the final chapter to their professional career,” said Moore. “I am grateful that KMBC has allowed me to choose that path — to maintain valued connections to the work and viewers I love, while creating more time to enjoy family and friends. I have dedicated over 40 years of my life to the service of this community. It has been, and always will be, one of the most satisfying and rewarding achievements of my life.”

Moore started working at KMBC in 1968 and was named primary anchor in 1972.
